Maximon is the God of the Underworld, according to the Mayan religion. Although he does not wear Mayan clothing, he has always helped the people to petition the the Mayan gods for favors, in exchange for gifts of alcohol or tobacco. The fruits that decorate his lair are a tradition that goes back to the roots of the Maya, are are still part of the Maya art of today.
